The $ 36 eight-week body transformation taking the internet by storm.
Move over #fitspo and #cleaneating, there’s a new healthy hashtag in town and behind it is a massive community of fit, happy and motivated women taking over Instagram one post at a time.
Introducing #fitgirlcode and if you haven’t heard of it just yet, sit tight, because you’re just about to.
Over 200,000 women around the world have joined the FitGirlCode tribe, a health and wellbeing movement that started in the Netherlands in March 2014 and is quickly sweeping across the globe.
“FitGirlCode is an online community for women worldwide who are interested in starting or maintaining a healthy and fit lifestyle,” the website says. “We provide them with the most delicious healthy recipes, new workout trends, and beauty and lifestyle updates.”
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we’ve heard it all before. But what makes FitGirlCode different?
“However, we like to emphasise that balance is the key to success. So if you want to have that glass of wine or eat a whole chocolate bar – go for it!”
Now you’ve got our interest!
Despite its now massive online community, FitGirlCode started as a single Instagram account when the community’s Dutch founder Aranka van der Voorden wanted to share her healthy lifestyle with likeminded women online.
Brand Relations Manager of FitGirlCode, Shelley Barendregt, told myBody+Soul Aranka’s grams quickly grew into a huge community of women supporting and motivating each other.
“Within a month the account had 10,000 followers and at that point we decided to start a blog,” said Barendregt. “The estimated size of the FitGirlCode community now encompasses over 200,000 women worldwide.”
Search the #fitgirlcode hashtag and there’s over 277,000 individual images of inspiring transformations, recipes, and fitness inspiration from real girls who have embraced the lifestyle and have the results to prove it.
But with so many options and sources of advice out there, why are girls so obsessed with FitGirlCode?
“I think that in the FitGirlCode community there’s a lot of bonding and commitment,” says Barendregt. “Women feel like they can share their personal stories and gain support and motivation from others in the community. Our readers feel connected to our bloggers and I believe that’s a big part of why they keep coming back.”
Key to this is FitGirlCode’s nutrition and fitness program called the FitGirlCode guide.
The program, which is available as an e-book, provides eight weeks worth of meal plans, grocery lists, workout schedules, recipes, mindfulness exercises and even contains a happiness journal for a wholistic, simple approach to health.
The guide is designed to be in line with the FitGirlCode mindset of enjoying a fit and healthy lifestyle, but not by starving yourself or stopping yourself from enjoying food. And from what we can see, the recipes are simple, healthy and delicious.
So just who is your average Fit Girl?
“She’s a strong woman, not necessarily in muscles but in mind,” said Barendregt. “She dedicates herself to her goals and believes that eating healthy does not have to be boring. Instead, she loves to try out new recipes and gets a kick out of setting a new PB. She doesn’t always know it yet, but SHE’S AWESOME!”
Julia is just one of the FitGirlCode women who says the program’s online community has made all the difference to her motivation.
“To motivate myself to stick to my goal, I try to keep my routine interesting by looking up different exercises and healthy diet plans and new recipes,” Julia said. “I use Instagram a lot for this by following all these girls who have the same goal as me. It really motivates you!”
So can Aussie women get involved?
“Of course!” says Barendregt. “We’ve done literally everything for you; the only thing you have to do is get the groceries and start your fit journey. We can promise you, you won’t be hungry and all the meals are simple to prepare. Ingredients can be bought at your local supermarket and are budget-proof. The Fitgirlcode Guide can be bought here: http://shop.fitgirlcode.com/nl/ebook-fitgirlcode-guide-engels.html It’s €24.95 so converted to AUD that would be $ 36.00.”
$ 36 for eight weeks of food and fitness plans won’t break the bank and is one of the cheapest online programs out there.
But if you’re not quite ready to sign up for the full experience, here are FitGirlCode’s top five tips for living a healthy and happy life:
1. Be kind to yourself! If everything doesn’t go according to plan, that’s ok. Don’t punish yourself for it but pick up where you left off.
2. PLEASE don’t starve yourself in order to lose weight. This isn’t going to make you healthy nor happy. You can eat a lot and still lose weight by eating the right foods. You really don’t have to be hungry!
3. Get a BFFF (Best Fit Friend Forever). It’s much more fun together and you can be each others’ motivation. You won’t cancel on your running date so easily if you know you’re letting the other down 😉
4. Make sure you have a specific and measurable goal in mind, this makes it a lot easier to follow through on your plans. Also think of a reward for when you are going to achieve your goal.
5. Last but not least: love yourself. It doesn’t matter how much you weigh or what you look like. It’s about the person within and only you can make yourself feel comfortable in your skin. We only get one body to live in, so let’s cherish that body. Remember: you are awesome.
